You are here > news > Peter Derbyshire

It is with some sadness that we have heard about the passing of Pete Derbyshire a couple of weeks ago. Peter, for many years, was one of the stalwarts of surf lifesaving in Wales.

Pete joined the Rhoose Club in the early 1970’s quickly becoming vice captain followed by club captain. He was heavily involved in training with the club and encouraged many people to try for the Welsh Surf Lifesaving team.

Peter and several others made Rhoose Lifeguards their first Surf Ski made of plywood from Australia specifications.

During the 1970’s he joined the SLSA Wales Board of Examiners (BoE) and later became Superintendent Examiner. As was the case throughout the 1970’s, 80’s and 90’s the BoE’s organised and run the Welsh Championships and Pete was Chief Referee on many occasions.

He was a good ski paddler and did many long distance races in a double ski with his good friend, Gerald Cooper.

After retiring from aircraft engineering he took up carpentry and made many trophies and awards for Rhoose Lifeguard Club and SLSA Wales.

He served Surf Lifesaving in Wales for many years, becoming a Life Member after three decades of outstanding commitment.

Our thoughts are with Peter`s family and friends.
