News

The volunteers of the Rhondda (Cold Knap) Lifeguard are celebrating after being presented with The Queen`s Award for Voluntary Service (QAVS), the MBE for volunteer groups.

Presenting the award on behalf of Her Majesty was the Lord Lieutenant of Mid Glamorgan, Mrs Kate Thomas and also in attendance was the Rt Hon Alun Cairns MP, who nominated the Lifeguard Club for this prestigious award.

The Rhondda Lifeguard Club is fairly unique in the UK, because it was formed in the land-locked Rhondda Valleys, some 20 miles from the sea. They have been in existence for 55 years, 50 of those at the Knap and during that time they have rescued 111 people. They joined Surf Lifesaving in Wales in 1984.
