News

After the recent government changes in DBS legislation SLSA Wales Board of Management has now agreed these new procedures.

SLSA Wales lead officer will no longer receive a copy of an applicant’s DBS certificate. The applicant only will receive a copy. Each club Child Protection Officer (CPO) will now have to ask to see that certificate and make a note of certificate number and expiry date etc, and if there are any convictions, cautions listed. If the CPO is uncertain of anything on the certificate they will contact lead officer.

More responsibility should be put on the coach/helper to ensure they have a current DBS certificate and they should be asking their CPO to get them checked.

If a coach/helper does not have a current DBS certificate they will not be permitted to attend SLSA Wales coaching events such as nipper and junior camp.

The CPO will now have to keep more accurate records to make sure all certificates have been seen and send the lead officer an up to date list of all DBS records in their club every 4 months. 1st April, 1st August and 1st December. Can you send me your 1st return this August please. See DBS spreadsheet in Public Documents area and just change club name at the top to your own club. SLSA Wales Board of Management may take action against that club if these returns are not done.

An applicant that has previously completed multiple DBS applications for various organisations will now have the option to open a DBS account that will allow an on line certificate to be viewed by various organisations provided they will be working with the same workforce i.e. children

The DBS check and expiry date will now be recorded on the SLSA Wales MIS system. A SLSA Wales Code of Conduct should be signed by every member that does a DBS check and will be kept on file by the lead officer.

In the Public Documents in the members area, there is a Poster for you to put up in your clubhouse or swimming pool.

IT IS NOW VERY IMPORTANT EACH CLUB APPOINTS A CHILD PROTECTION OFFICER THAT WILL DO THIS JOB CORRECTLY AND DILIGENTLY AS FAILURE TO DO DBS CHECKS ON YOUR COACHES AND HELPERS AND NOT SUPPLYING SLSA WALES LEAD OFFICER WITH ACCURATE INFORMATION MAY RESULT IN YOUR CLUB BEING SANCTIONED BY BOARD OF MANAGEMENT. SLSA WALES AND EACH AFFILIATED CLUB HAS A LEGAL RESPONSIBILITY TO PROVIDE A SAFE WORKING ENVIRONMENT FOR CHILDREN.

Regards
Shan Parry
SLSA Wales
Lead Officer
