A couple of months back my 97 year-old dad, Dr George Middleton, received a `Lifetime Achievement` Platinum Award from the UK National Parks. Pembrokeshire Coast National Park CEO Tegryn Jones and colleagues hosted a local award ceremony yesterday at Oriel y Parc in St.Davids.

When Cllr Paul Harries, Chair of the National Park Authority arrived he said hello to my dad in a way that unsettled him for a moment..."We`ve met before George, a long time ago, but when we met, you slapped me". My dad looked understandably concerned until Paul clarified the situation with a smiling response "You slapped me because we met 63 years ago, when you`d just delivered me".

In winning the Platinum Award, my dad was picked from a shortlist that included Dame Fiona Reynolds, former Director General of the National Trust, by a panel including Bill Bryson. It was so lovely to hear him sharing more of the stories he`d gathered in his 50 years (so far) of volunteering.

A huge thanks for Ranger Ian Meopham and Ranger Services Manager Libby Taylor for the the ceaseless support that they give volunteers to make epic contribution possible.
