15th March 2020

In relation to the increasing concerns regarding the outbreak of COVID-19 Coronavirus, please see the following advice regarding both SLSA Wales and club activities.

Nipper and Youth Camp

Regretfully we have postponed the Nipper and Youth Camps for 2020. It was a decision that was not taken lightly given how celebrated these events are by the membership. However, the Board acted quickly so that Clubs and members could make appropriate plans and not lose out on any non-refundable deposits should there be a late cancellation.

Club run training, events & carnivals

As an Association we have no further information than that publically available from the UK government, Welsh Government and Public Health Wales. We are aware of the steps taken by organisations such as FAW and WRU but have not been informed of the medical fact behind their decisions. As a result, each individual club will have to conduct their own risk assessment and carry out their session in line with the current government guidance which can be found at the bottom of this bulletin.
• Clubs should ensure that all members who attend training sessions are feeling well and advise that if a member is feeling unwell (fever and constant cough) they should be self-isolating and not attending training.
• If your club is unsure about whether you should or should not run a session, we would recommend you go with the latter.

First aid and Life support

SLSA Wales recommend that Life Support and First Aid training be suspended with immediate effect. If you have any questions, please refer to previous emails forwarded from the Resuscitation Council and the guidance on their website for the training of resuscitation and first aid.

We understand that with the current ban on first aid training and resuscitation, we will not be able to undertake examinations according to our recognised framework. We are working hard to find a solution for those who need awards for employment with the RNLI. There may also be members who required awards for the competition season. Again, we are looking at this and will provide information when more is known.

SLSA Wales Sporting Events

With the Welsh Government still allowing public events to continue we will also continue to plan for events as per the calendar. Should this change then we will advertise cancelled events on the SLSA Wales website.

Ranking 1 – 7th June will be moved to a South Wales Beach (Aberavon or Porthcawl). This change is to reduce the possibility of members not being able to claim back accommodation and associated fees should we later cancel / postpone.

Mini League 3 – The mini leagues are designed as a warm up to the main Stillwater championships. With the GB stillwaters postponed until November we will also be postponing the third and final round of the 2020 series until around the same time.
The decision for this is to give our members an opportunity to get back into competitive Stillwater racing prior to the GB competition.

We encourage all members to follow the advice written above to ensure a calm, collective and practical approach, in keeping all in our community as well as practicably possible. We are monitoring the situation on an ongoing basis, will continue to follow the expert information provided to us from Welsh Government, public health wales and Sport Wales, and will let you know of any change in the advice we are giving to our members and clubs.
