At the International Masters Games Association’s (IMGA) General Assembly held today, 4th November 2020, it was confirmed that the 10th edition of the World Masters Games (WMG) planned for Kansai, Japan in May 2021 will now be postponed to a future date due to the problems associated with the Covid-19 pandemic.
Our Japanese hosts had worked hard to find a way of providing a safe and healthy environment for all Masters’ participants. However, despite their efforts, they did not feel that the system could be operated with complete confidence. They therefore reached the conclusion that the severe restrictions that would need to be implemented conflicted greatly with the philosophy of the WMG:
Sports enthusiasts will gather from all over the world and enjoy lifelong sports To enjoy interaction between participants and local residents Participants enjoy tourism with family and friends In the light of the above, the WMG 2021 Kansai Local Organising Committee concluded that it will be best to postpone the games until a time when it will be practical to hold the event.
It is expected that this will be in May 2022, and the Local Organising Committee are in discussion with the IMGA Board to confirm the new dates as soon as possible.
Further information will be provided as soon as possible to the 14,000 participants who have already registered for the Games to give advice on what they will need to do next.
For further information see the WMG 2021 Kansai Website.
