News

To celebrate 40 years of the World Games, the International World Games Association (IWGA) has just published a list of the 24 greatest athletes who have been successful during that time.

The ILS nominated Marcel Hassemeier from Germany to be included in this list of the best athletes who have participated at a World Games event, and we are pleased to announce that he was selected. He was voted as the World Games Athlete of 2013 after he won 4 gold and 1 silver medals at the Cali, Colombia World Games.

From 09.00 CET on Friday 8th January 2021, voting will begin to choose the World Games Greatest Athlete of all time. We hope that members of all ILS Member Federations will be encouraged cast as many votes as possible for Marcel during the voting period.

To see all 24 of the athletes that have been nominated, including a short video clip of Marcel, and for details of how to vote visit the IWGA website:

Voting process: Anyone can vote to choose the best athlete from this list of excellent athletes, and you can vote once in each 24-hour period. However, in order for a valid vote to be counted, you must vote for 2 of the athletes each time. For the first-choice athlete 2 votes are given, and for the second-choice candidate 1 vote is given. You therefore have to vote for 2 athletes in different sports each time. If you try to give a vote for just one athlete, the vote will not be registered at all.

The ten athletes with the greatest number of votes as at 16.00 CET on 20th January 2021 will go forward to the final voting process that will end at 14.00 CET on 1st February 2021. The athletes in the final vote will carry forward the votes achieved up to 20th January for the final voting period. The number of votes cast for each candidate will be visible throughout the campaign.

The IWGA asks all voters to act in accordance with fair play in sport. They will scrutinise the voting process closely and investigate any anomalies that occur. Any conduct that is against the sporting spirit may result in consequences
