On Tuesday evening 25th May, many clubs attended Whitmore Bay (Barry Island) for training and NVBLQ awards.

Just as the awards were about to start one eagle eyed club member from Whitmore Bay spotted 2 men cut off by the tide. The Cold Knap IRB, crewed by both Cold Knap and Rhoose Lifeguard members went to offer assistance. On arrival they pulled one casualty from the water and brought the other back to the beach.

One man had an open lower leg fracture and the other suffered from prolonged exposure to the cold and water. These were looked after by members from Whitmore bay, Llantwit major and Jackson’s bay lifeguard club members.

They were then passed into the care of Welsh Ambulance Services NHS Trust, Wales Air Ambulance Charity & Barry Coastguard and taken to hospital.

There are too many individuals to mention but well done to all involved. It really demonstrated the importance of our training and how all of our clubs can come together to save lives.

Llantwit Major Lifeguards, Rhoose Lifeguards, Rhondda Cold Knap Lifeguard Club, Whitmore bay & Jacksons Bay, your members did you proud today. Had this been 20 minutes later it could have been a very different story.
