The Surf Life Saving Association of Wales (SLSA Wales) and The Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS UK) have been working collaboratively on updating and streamlining the National Vocational Beach Lifeguard Qualification (NVBLQ).

The main purpose of this update was to standardise the assessment approach and provide clear assessment guidance for both SLSA Wales and RLSS UK Trainer Assessors; this includes how to set up an assessment, candidate and casualty briefings, and more clear assessment criteria for each element of the assessment.

We have also taken this opportunity to update the Guidance and Syllabus and supporting documents that support training and the new assessment strategy. The new assessment materials are available in the Members Area of the SLSA Wales website.

New NVBLQ documents are in the Members Only area on the website and can be found in the Assessments folder,

NVBLQ Syllabus 2022
Guidance for practical training for Assessment (edition 1)
NVBLQ Practical Assessment Record (edition 1)

All old-style documents have been removed.

The theory will be assessed electronically unless the candidate has specific needs. And will still require the candidate to achieve 80% correct answers

The Pass requirement for each practical assessment is detailed on the Practical Assessment Record.
The pass criteria is detailed in the yellow box. If a candidate fails any of the grey sections, this is deemed as a fail of that section.

Assessors prompts have also been included.
